It had come out of nowhere — dark clouds, roaring winds, and the unmistakable scent of rain that promised to flood the already swollen river.

His paws were sore. His fur was matted with dampness, but he pushed on, ignoring the ache in his limbs, the hunger gnawing at his stomach. The woods were vast, but they felt smaller now. It was only a matter of time before the rain broke the dam and everything would be washed away.

He’d seen the rising waters earlier, creeping through the forest, pushing the debris in their wake. He’d seen the way the animals had scattered, too, each looking for higher ground, each trying to outrun something they couldn’t quite see.

His legs were trembling when he finally spotted a safe place, a narrow ledge on the side of a hill that led up toward a rocky outcrop. The climb was steep, and his energy was all but gone, but he made it.

When he collapsed into the shelter of the outcrop, he didn’t immediately rest. His eyes darted back toward the water, the deep shadows of the trees bending under the weight of the storm. The river was no longer a distant threat — it had swallowed the trail he’d just run, devouring the path like it wasn’t even there.

He curled into himself for warmth, fur matted against the rough stone. His heart raced, not from fear, but from the sudden stillness of everything around him. The storm had stopped.

And yet, everything was far too quiet. The usual sounds of the forest — birds calling, leaves rustling, distant howls — had faded to nothing.

For a long while, the fox didn’t move.

Then, after the silence stretched long enough to make his bones ache, he heard the sound he was waiting for.

The river was still there, deep and raging, but the storm was over. The waters wouldn’t reach this far.

He wasn’t safe, not yet, but the worst was over.

The fox let out a shaky breath, curled tighter, and let himself sleep, knowing that the storm had passed, even if he didn’t yet understand how.

The little fox was exhausted before he even realized it.
