Somewhere in the night, the lamb had pushed too close. Maybe he’d been chasing warmth. Maybe he’d followed his mother’s shadow and missed by inches.

By morning, the wire had cut deep.

One hind leg was wrapped tight, flesh swollen and torn where he’d fought to pull free. The ground beneath him was churned into mud, marked with small, frantic circles where he’d gone round and round until his strength gave out. The fence hummed faintly in the wind, still warm from the sun, as if nothing terrible had happened there.

When the farmer saw him, the lamb lifted his head.

He didn’t cry.

His mouth opened once, soundless, then closed again. His sides shuddered with breath that came too fast, too shallow. Shock had already started to dull the edges of pain.

They cut the wire carefully. Each snip made his body jerk. Not away — toward. Toward the hands that hurt but also freed. When the last strand fell away, he collapsed into the mud, leg useless, eyes wide and glassy.

The vet arrived quickly. Too quickly for good news.

The leg had lost circulation hours ago. Infection was creeping upward, silent and unstoppable. Even if they amputated, even if everything went right, he would never keep up. Never outrun cold. Never outrun hunger.

They laid him on clean straw in the shade.

The lamb pressed his nose into the ground, breathing in the smell of earth and hay. He twitched once when a fly landed on his ear. Then he went very still, as if listening for something that wasn’t coming.

The farmer knelt beside him longer than necessary.

“I’m sorry,” he said, not sure who he was saying it to.

When it was over, the fence still stood. The pasture went quiet again. Somewhere beyond the hill, other lambs ran, whole and unaware.

The place where the wire had held him stayed dark and damp long after the sun moved on.

As if the ground itself remembered how hard a small body had fought to stay.

The lamb was found tangled in wire that wasn’t meant to catch anything alive.
