They were always looking at the water\u2014reading the surface, watching for ripples, for flashes, for the little signs that meant food. The net came up heavy that morning, dripping and alive with movement, and everyone smiled the way people do when luck finally shows its face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then the net twisted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Something long and dark rolled inside it, and the mood changed instantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cA snake,\u201d one of them said, voice flat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not the casual kind of snake you ignore in the grass. This one was thick-bodied, patterned, muscular\u2014caught so tightly in nylon that the mesh had carved grooves into its scales. Each time it tried to pull free, the net tightened, turning panic into a trap that worked harder the more it was fought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The snake\u2019s head lifted and struck at the air\u2014not to bite, but to warn. Its mouth opened in a silent snap, and its tongue flickered fast, tasting fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the oldest fisherman\u2014Rafi\u2014raised a hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNo,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cIt\u2019s stuck. That\u2019s all. It\u2019s stuck.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The snake thrashed again, and the net bit deeper across its neck and midsection. A few scales peeled, exposing raw skin beneath. Blood\u2014thin and bright\u2014mixed with the river water dripping from the mesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rafi crouched and studied it like a mechanic studying an engine. Where is the tension? Where is the knot? Where does the trap do its worst work?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He told the others to hold the net steady, not tight\u2014steady.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then he took out his pocketknife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The men muttered. The snake hissed. The air held its breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rafi moved slowly, not because he was calm, but because he knew speed would turn this into a strike. He lowered a cloth\u2014an old sack\u2014over the snake\u2019s head, letting darkness settle it. The snake still writhed, but the strikes stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With two fingers, he lifted the net away from the snake\u2019s neck by a millimeter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Just enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then he cut one strand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The net loosened slightly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The snake jerked, and the men jumped back, but Rafi kept his hands steady. He cut again. And again. Each cut reduced the net\u2019s grip, turning it from a fist into a web.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Minutes passed like hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The snake\u2019s body trembled with exhaustion. Its breathing\u2014barely visible\u2014came in small muscular waves along its sides. The river smell mixed with blood and nylon and fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Finally, one last strand held the midsection, tight and ugly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rafi lifted it carefully and sliced through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The net fell away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The snake didn\u2019t shoot off like people expect snakes to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It just\u2026 lay there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Free, but stunned. As if its body couldn\u2019t compute the absence of pressure. Its head stayed under the cloth, still, tongue no longer flickering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rafi stepped back and waited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then the snake slowly lifted its head, pushed the cloth away, and looked at the circle of humans around it\u2014faces tense, hands gripping sticks they didn\u2019t use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For a heartbeat, nobody moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then the snake slid forward, dragging part of its body in a slow, pained line. The cuts on its scales glistened. It paused once, coiling slightly, as if deciding whether escape was worth the movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then it chose the reeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It disappeared into the wet grass with quiet efficiency, leaving only a dark trail in the mud where it had been.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The men exhaled like they\u2019d been underwater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Someone laughed shakily. Someone swore. Someone said, \u201cIt could\u2019ve killed us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rafi wiped his knife on his pants and shook his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt didn\u2019t,\u201d he said. \u201cIt wanted to leave. Same as we would.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They repaired the net later, knotting new strands where Rafi had cut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But when they pulled it up again, it felt lighter\u2014not with fish, but with something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Like for once, the river had taken nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
